DJ Quik Serves 5 Months in Jail

By Jesse Fairfax

West coast legendary rapper & producer DJ Quik has started a five-month stint in jail for assaulting his sister.

Quik, born David Marvin Blake surrendered in Fontana Superior Court last week to begin his sentence.

The incident occurred in 2003 when he pulled a gun on his sister during a family argument, according to police reports.

Last year he was ordered to spend 45 days in jail on weekends after pleading guilty to the assault, but never served his time. This resulted in a violation of his probation, causing Judge Keith Davis to increase Quik’s jail time to 150 consecutive days and ordering him to begin serving his time immediately.

DMX Sent To Jail Again

By Josiah Heyward

After finally making an long overdue court appearance to battle traffic charges yesterday, DMX was sent to jail by the judge who had issued a warrant for arrest.

Judge Barbara Leak, who had granted DMX two postponements, issued a warrent for the rapper’s arrest, after he failed to appear in court on Wednesday (June 26) to face numerous driving charges from an arrest in White Plains, NY, last month.

X (born Earl Simmons) was stopped in downtown White Plains, NY on June 2nd for drivingt his 2001 Chevy Surburban at unreasonable speeds and making unsafe lane changes. Police said they found the rapper not wearing a seat belt and without a driver’s license.

He was then ticketed and told to appear in court on June 16, which he missed due to a ‘prior engagement’.

After that, the Yonkers bred rapper was ordered to appear in court on June 21, but also missed that commitment. His absence at yesterday’s scheduled hearing was the last straw for Judge Leak. “We have granted him a number of courtesies. It ends now,” she said. At Thursday’s hearing, Leak ordered DMX to be held on $25,000 bail. In the past two months, DMX has had several brushes with the law. He was recently cited for carrying a concealed handgun outside a nightclub and was also ticketed for another traffic violation, where he caused an accidenty by driving on the shoulder of a road.

In early May, he was arrested at Heathrow airport for verbal abusing an airline crew during a flight.

Supreme Court to Hear Case

By Josiah Heyward

A legal battle between TVT and Island Def Jam over early recordings by Ja Rule’s Cash Money Click will not be decided by the Supreme Court after Justices declined to hear the case earlier yesterday (6/26).

TVT sought out the higher court to overturn a decision handed down by New York’s 2nd U.S. Circuit of Appeals which took back a $132 million jury verdict TVT won in its original dispute with Island Def Jam Music Group.

Apparently the argument dates back to the days when Irv Gotti, born Irving Lorenzo, was an employee of TVT Records and Jeffrey Atkins, better known as Ja Rule, was a rapper in a group called Cash Money Click who were also at TVT. Although Gotti and Ja Rule eventually left TVT for greater success at Island Def Jam, TVT maintained the right to release music recorded by the group.

Court filings from Island Def Jam’s lawyers claim the dispute between the two labels began in 2001 when TVT threatened to release some lackluster Cash Money Click songs at the same time as Def Jam planned to release a Ja Rule album. According to the original TVT case, a side deal struck by representatives from both parties was not honored by Island Def Jam.
