Common Supports HIV/AIDS Campaign

By Elle Castro

Lyrical MC Common has committed to give four spoken word pieces to the Kaiser Foundation’s The Know is Spreading campaign. The goal of the campaign is to spread HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention methods to contracting the virus.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand the effects of HIV/AIDS and realized the difference self-love and support from the community can make,” Common revealed. “I also know how much of an influence we as Hip-Hop artists have on our audiences, so I wanted to share my self and my talents to help open the eyes and hearts of young people to the importance of testing.”

The city of Philadelphia will also contribute to the cause. The city has created a HIV/AIDS awareness mural on one of the blocks. The Barnstormers and artists from the city’s Mural Arts Program are the creative minds behind the artwork.

There have been numerous PSA’s appearing on Viacom television, radio and other outdoor properties around the country.

The mayor of Philadelphia, John Street commented, “HIV/AIDS continues to be a threat to the people of Philadelphia and across the country. My administration is dedicated to taking innovative steps to highlight the importance of testing to our citizens. That’s why we are proud to support this effort and build on this city’s commitment to tackle HIV/AIDS and on its long tradition of public art. By teaming up with KNOW HIV/AIDS, we are able to spread knowledge about the disease, which will serve as our greatest defense against a growing epidemic.”

LL Speaks Hip-Hop

By Josiah Heyward

LL Cool J (who was honored on VH1 Hip-Hop Honors) recently made an appearance on the “Tony Danza Show.”

Danza asked LL about his views on race relations, and LL responded, “Where we are now is obvious; [in] the fact that most of the Hurricane Katrina donations came from whites, something people don’t really talk about.” Along with that, LL said that we still have a lot of healing to do, mainly from stereotypes that give life to prejudices. He gave an example by pretending to be a black male going to a yacht club where the first thing people wonder is whether or not he’ll bring friends in and start throwing loud parties. LL said, “There is some validity to that question, but people should be looked at on a case by case bases just like our judicial system does.”

LL also spoke about being a 9th grade dropout who’s been able to accomplish everything he’s wanted to in music and film by the grace of God. When asked about his opinion on the state of Hip-Hop today, LL said he’s a fan of it all but there needs to be a better balance.

Other points in the interview included mention of LL’s upcoming movies with Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Queen Latifah. He also mentioned his hat collection, which has sold somewhere in the thousands.

LL is also back in the studio and you can anticipate a new CD release sometime in 2006.

Young Jeezy Helps Other Sole Survivors

By Joshua Johnson

Last week, Young Jeezy called on his homies T.I. and David Banner to help him help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

The rappers urged people to donate to the victims such necessities as water, canned goods, clothes, baby formula and diapers, to be distributed to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in Alabama, New Orleans and Mississippi.

Jeezy says he was “depressed” after watching the coverage of the disaster on the news, so he opened up his 12 room Atlanta area home so for hurricane victims to have a place to stay. Rather than just donating a check, Jeezy has been all about helping the victims directly with essential items they need.

In addition, as reported previously here on MyHipHopSpace.com, Jeezy contributed his rap skills to David Banner’s “Heal the Hood” concert that took place in Atlanta earlier this month.

Radio Diva’s Hubby Buggs Out

By Kira Monet

Radio’s “Queen Gossipist” Wendy Williams’ husband was fuming on the VH-1 Hip Hop Honors red carpet last Thursday 9/22.

It has been reported that her hubby Kevin Hunter pushed through the crowd as Wendy was covering the red carpet for her VH-1 show “Wendy’s Got the Heat,” and demanded that she leave.

“Yo… we leaving now!” I can’t believe this bulls@$#,” Wendy’s hubby was reported as ranting. As it seems, she didn’t put enough pep in her step, causing him to turn and push his weight around a little yelling “Give him the mic and get your s*&%! We’re leaving now!” With that, the devoted gossip queen put her pride aside and was out.

Wendy’s camera crew stood there dumbfounded. “Oh… Kevin’s mad because I think he had problems getting in,” as concluded by a crew member.
