August 18, 1969, Jimi Hendrix, an influential African-American in rock music, played on the unofficial last day of Woodstock. Hendrix, like many Hip-Hop producers of today, was influenced by the blues of B.B. King and Muddy Waters. Hendrix was inducted in the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Allhiphop.com reported that RED Distribution signed a deal to bring back the enterprising Rawkus Records. Rawkus was founded in 1996 by Brian Brater and Jarret Myerin. The company helped launch the careers of Pharoah Monch and Talib Kweli.

Star Fires Back At City Councilman

Former Power 105.1 FM DJ Star has filed a $55 million defamation lawsuit against the city councilman who prompted the radio station to fire him. The suit, filed yesterday (Aug. 2) by attorney James Cinque, accuses City Councilman John Liu (D-Queens) of launching a malicious crusade against Star that led to his firing and arrest.

“Councilman Liu has continued to publicly make false, disparaging statements about me,” Star, 42, said in a statement.

Liu publicly criticized the shock jock and called for a boycott of Power 105 after Star made anti-Asian comments about the family of rival on-air personality DJ Envy, Gia Casey, in May.

Star also made remarks implying a threat of sexual abuse against the couple’s four-year-old child and threatened to urinate on the girl. He offered $500 to any listener who provided details about where the girl went to school.

Star was later arrested and charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child. Despite criminal charges being dropped if he does three days of community service and stays out of trouble for six months, Star said he has to even the score with Liu and others.

Fat Joe Signs to Virgin Records

Fat Joe has parted ways with Atlantic Records to join the Virgin Records family of labels.

The full details of the deal have yet to come out, but reliable sources have confirmed Joe’s move to Virgin, which includes the independent distribution of Caroline. A deal with Caroline provides Joe with the power of the Virgin brand and higher returns on the dollar for his Terror Quad label.

When contacted, reps for Fat Joe said “that absolutely nothing has been signed.”

A source at Koch also shared that the they were among several labels involved in a bidding war to sign Joe.

His upcoming LP is to feature guest appearances from Lil’ Wayne and production from DJ Khaled, Scott Storch, The Runners, Streetrunner and LV, among others.

Fat Joe’s Me, Myself & I is scheduled to hit stores in the fall.
